Please join the CODP lecturers on an amazing Photographic Outing to Soccer City in Johannesburg on Thursday 13th May at 13h30, which includes a tour of the stadium.
The cost for the outing is R380 and spaces are limited so please book early by contacting Colette on colette@codp.co.za. This outing can be done with either a compact digital or an SLR camera.
If you live in South Africa and you don’t reside in a cave, by now you must surely have been exposed to the infectious ‘vibe’ surrounding the upcoming 2010 Soccer World Cup. One of it’s premier venues is the ‘Calabash’ Soccer City Stadium in the North West of Johannesburg. What was once the FNB Stadium has over the last two years been transformed into a truly unique and spectacular example of African architecture. According to the City of Johannesburg, the budget for the stadium´s reconstruction project was estimated at R1.2 billion.
From an engineering perspective, Soccer City is the biggest roofed stadium ever built for a World Cup final. The design of the stadium is based on a calabash or ‘African pot’, this being the most recognisable object used to represent the African continent, otherwise known as the ‘melting pot of cultures.’ The design has been constructed on a raised podium, the ‘pit of fire,’ to lend the appeal of the pot being fired. The fiery pit demarcates the security area and turnstiles line separating the outer areas and the secure inner areas.
As a photographer you now have the opportunity to join us for a tour of this fantastic venue. There are some amazing opportunities for architectural and urban environmental photography. The stadium will host the opening match of the 2010 FIFA World Cup on 11 June followed by group stages matches, a second round match and a quarter final.
On 11 July 2010, the two best teams in the world will step out onto the turf of Soccer City to determine which country´s team will be crowned World Champions and hold the Jules Rimet Trophy. We look forward to you joining us for this unique opportunity to capture some incredible images of the stadium.

I agree, please put together another soccer city Saturday option if possible.
Thanks :)
We wish we could, but unfortunately all the Friday, Saturday and Sunday slots have been fully booked until the World Cup. We will however be able to get back into the stadium around August, so the weekend Soccer City outings will commence then :)

I was fortunate to get a slot last Thursday - last outing until after the World Cup. What an experience! The place is magnificent! Very contrasty lighting but we were warned. Did some bracketing which I converted to HDR - really interesting. Thank you Udo and Carl for hosting it and guiding us.
Hey Manny, it's a pleasure - glad you enjoyed it! Keep an eye out on my blog, I'll be uploading some pics on Soccer City soon. Then we've been inundated with requests when the next outing will be - bookings re-open in August, so we'll let you know as soon as we find out. Cheers, Udo
